Why does it take so long to get good rankings at Google anymore?

The following is a very revealing article about one of the many parts of Google's ranking algorith. Long speculated upon, there is certainly a delay in getting a site well ranked in Google, a much longer delay than with the other major search engines like Yahoo and MSN.
